The Innovation & IPR Cell was established in 2018 as a constituent unit of the Directorate of Research, in response to the growing need to identify, nurture, and legally protect the innovative work produced by faculty, researchers, and students. It operates as the institution's single point of contact for anything related to intellectual property — from a first idea disclosure to a granted patent. Functioning directly under the Directorate of Research, the Cell is mandated to build innovation capacity across departments, maintain the institution's IPR policy, facilitate patent and copyright filings, and serve as the bridge between research output and the campus startup and incubation ecosystem. It works closely with the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC), department-level innovation coordinators, and empanelled patent attorneys to keep the process accessible to first-time inventors.

The Innovation & IPR Cell does not work in isolation. It sits at the centre of the institution's broader innovation ecosystem, working alongside the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) to run ideation and hackathon activities, feeding protected, IP-cleared ideas into the Incubation Centre, and coordinating with startup support programmes so that a promising disclosure can move smoothly from lab bench to registered company. This connected structure means an inventor never has to figure out "who to talk to next" — the Cell tracks that handover itself.
The Innovation Cell provides comprehensive startup and incubation support by connecting aspiring entrepreneurs with experienced mentors, industry experts, and innovation networks. Through pre-incubation and incubation facilities, innovators receive guidance in idea validation, prototype development, business planning, intellectual property protection, and market readiness. The cell also facilitates access to seed funding opportunities, investor networks, and government initiatives such as the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), empowering students and faculty to transform innovative ideas into scalable startups and sustainable enterprises.
